According to a survey conducted by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, formerly the American Dietetic Association, (Compensation and Benefits Survey of the Dietetics Profession 2015), registered dietitians (RD)/registered dietitian nutritionists (RDN) who have been working for five years or less earn a salary of approximately $43,700- $58,000 annually. The median salary for all dietitians was $63,700. Salaries vary based on the type of position, geographic location, and supply of RDs/RDNs. Salaries are shown to increase with advanced degrees, years of experience and specialist certifications and vary among career options. Employment opportunities are available in a variety of positions including acute care, long term care, community nutrition, food and nutrition management, private consultation, and education and research. Many dietetics practitioners receive benefits with employment, including paid holidays, medical coverage, funding for professional development and opportunities for contribution to retirement programs. Some of the highest paying positions for RDs/RDNs include those in food and nutrition management, consultation and business, and education and research.
