Salary and Job Outlook for Registered Dietitians/Registered Dietitian Nutritionists

According to a survey conducted by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, formerly the American Dietetic Association, (Compensation and Benefits Survey 2013), registered dietitians (RD)/registered dietitian nutritionists (RDN) who have been working for five years or less earn a salary of approximately $38,000- $58,200 annually.  The median salary for all dietitians was $61,000. Salaries vary based on the type of position, geographic location, and supply of RDs/RDNs. Salaries are shown to increase with advanced degrees, years of experience and specialist certifications and vary among career options. Employment opportunities are available in a variety of positions including acute care, long term care, community nutrition, food and nutrition management, private consultation, and education and research. Many dietetics practitioners receive benefits with employment, including paid holidays, medical coverage, funding for professional development and opportunities for contribution to retirement programs. Some RDs/RDNs, such as those with experience, have seen increases in salaries since the last survey in 2011; however, median starting wages were lower in 2013 than in 2011 ($22.00 per hour compared to $24.04 per hour). Some of the highest paying positions for RDs/RDNs include those in food and nutrition management, consultation and business, and education and research.
