Honors Programs
This is for lower-division students only. Students are invited to participate as entering freshman based on high school GPA and SAT or ACT scores.
Graduating with Honors
All students with an upper division GPA of 3.5 graduate with honors. To graduate magna cum laude (high honors) or summa cum laude (highest honors), students must complete an honors thesis and have an upper division GPA of 3.75 and 3.85 respectively. The thesis is a written report of a research project or creative work in teaching, research or extension. No honors coursework is required to graduate with these designations.
Honors Thesis
An honors thesis is supervised by a faculty mentor who can be employed in any of the colleges at UF. A proposal for the thesis must be submitted to the FSHN Honors Coordinator for approval by the FSHN Undergraduate Committee and should include: 1) the objectives of the project; 2) a brief description of the project, including a timeline; and 3) your role in the project and the name of your faculty mentor. Two copies of the thesis with the CALS signature page must be turned in to the Honors Coordinator three weeks prior to graduation and will be reviewed by two members of the Undergraduate Committee. The Honors Coordinator will sign the signature page and return the two copies of the thesis with comments. Most students complete their honors project and thesis over a three-semester period:
First Semester: Students selects faculty advisor, picks up Honors packet (link to http://www.cals.ufl.edu/documents/thesisguide.pdf) from the CALS Dean’s office (2002 McCarty Hall D), and submits proposal to the FSHN Undergraduate Committee for approval.
Second Semester: Students works on project.
Third Semester: Students prepares thesis, obtains faculty advisor’s approval, turns in two copies of the thesis to the FSHN Honors Coordinator three weeks prior to graduation, obtains signature from the Honors Coordinator and turns in the thesis to CALS one week prior to graduation.
